Juwan Howard about to join Heat

This is the kind of pickup we’ve been expecting from the Heat.

Veteran -- and we really mean veteran: 16 seasons and age 37 -- forward Juwan Howard is closing in on a deal to join the Miami Heat, according to Ira Winderman writing for the Sun Sentinel.

“Juwan wants to get a ring and he has great respect for Coach Riley,” agent David Falk told the Sun Sentinel Tuesday “We’ve talked to the Heat. There’s a mutual interest. That’s all I feel comfortable saying at this point.”

You can’t run Howard out there long minutes, but last year in a limited role he was fine. He played about 22 minutes a game for the Blazers last season, giving them 6 points (shooting 50 percent) and 4.6 rebounds per game. He’s not anywhere near his peak, but in a limited role in a forward rotation with Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem could give the Heat some useful minutes.

Terms of the deal still being hammered out, but this will be for the veterans’ minimum.
