In the aftermath of Scott Skiles’ abrupt Thursday morning departure as head coach of the Orlando Magic, candidates are starting to emerge. GM Rob Hennigan told Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel that Frank Vogel, recently let go by the Indiana Pacers, will be on their list of candidates and they plan to reach out to him:

The Orlando Magic intend to reach out to Frank Vogel during their search for a new head coach, Magic general manager Rob Hennigan told the Orlando Sentinel on Friday.

Vogel, who compiled a 250-181 record during his tenure as the Indiana Pacers’ coach, became available when the Pacers decided to let Vogel’s contract expire after this season.

It’s unclear whether Vogel would be interested in the job. A phone call by the Sentinel on Friday morning to his agent’s office was not returned.

Vogel is probably the most in-demand coaching candidate left on the market, having been linked in recent weeks to the Rockets, Knicks and Grizzlies jobs since Pacers president Larry Bird announced last week that his contract would not be renewed.

The fit in Orlando is intriguing, and in terms of roster, the Magic job might be the most attractive of the remaining openings. There’s plenty of young talent there, including Aaron Gordon, Victor Oladipo, Elfrid Payton and Mario Hezonja, and Orlando will have significant cap space to play with in free agency this summer. If Vogel is interested, the match would make sense.
