Billy Donovan and the Thunder nabbed their big target as lead assistant coach – Monty Williams.

But they’re not done yet.

Marc Stein of ESPN:

Borrego took over when the Magic fired Jacque Vaughn in February. He was probably in over his head at that point, but he’s a solid assistant and the head-coaching experience should only help him. His Orlando players generally credited him as someone who should become a head coach one day.

As the Warriors have shown with Steve Kerr, there’s tremendous value in surrounding a first-time NBA head coach with strong assistants. Donovan had a lengthy career at Florida, unlike Steve Kerr, who was new to coaching at any level. But the support will help Donovan, too.

Donovan still has to prove his chops. But Oklahoma City is positioning him well with a great roster featuring Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka and a strong lead assistant in Williams. Borrego would only provide additional help.
