Team Canada hero Paul Henderson will be unable to travel to Russia to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series.
The 69-year-old that scored the most famous goal in Canadian hockey history (no offense, Mario and Sid) has been undergoing treatment for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.
“Paul was planning to go, but we have to be very, very cognizant of his situation,” fellow Team Canada alumnus Ron Ellis told the National Post Wednesday. “I’m very close to Paul. We’re very close friends. And I told Paul, ‘Look, I’m going to be protecting you like a hawk — if you don’t think you’re up to it, then you let me know, and I’ll explain it to people.’”
Henderson is still expected to attend two commemorative events in Toronto on Sept. 22.
