Gerrit Cole O/U 9.5 Strikeouts vs. Tigers

Yesterday it was Shane Bieber (12 strikeouts) and today, it is Gerrit Cole. This is probably the roughest two-game stretch of Detroit’s season, if you ask me.

Bieber had a no-hitter going into the seventh before allowing a solo homer. Cole, similarly to Bieber, had 12 strikeouts but over 6.0 innings against Detroit. Well, in Bieber’s first start against Detroit, he went 6.0 innings and struck out 12. Coincidence, I think not!

On a serious note, Cole had a nice bounceback game against the Chicago White Sox the last outing, recording seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings. He walked three and allowed four hits with 95 pitches for the win.

Cole owns a 2.33 ERA for the month to go along with 30 strikeouts in 27.0 innings and 20 hits. The 20 hits in four games are a little alarming, but after Detroit’s one-hit outing against Bieber, this is an excellent spot for Cole.

NBC’s model projects Cole to record 8.8 strikeouts in 7.0 innings. When Cole has gone 7.0 or more innings, he struck out 13, 11, 4, 12, and 7.

On the season, Detroit has the second-most strikeouts (517), rank 26th in batting average (.225) and own the third-most strikeouts over the last seven days and games (74).

Detroit strikes out at a 27.1% clip to right-handed pitchers, the second-most in the league. Cole averages 1.43 strikeouts per inning on the season and posted 43% of his pitches called strikes in the first meeting with Detroit.[[ad:athena]]

At those rates, Cole should need approximately 6.1-6.2 innings to hit 10 or more strikeouts. Cole has 12 strikeouts each of his last two starts against Detroit, dating back to 2019.

In his career against Detroit, Cole has faced 11 different hitters and they are a combined .115 on 77 at-bats, along with 44 strikeouts, 10 hits and six walks.

10 of those 11 hitters have a .200 batting average or less versus Cole. Detroit owns a 50.6% strikeout percentage against Cole. The Tigers had a 37.5% strikeout percentage against Bieber, entering Thursday’s game. A positive sign for Cole bettors.

Cole is 6-2 on the season with a 1.81 ERA and 92 strikeouts to eight walks in 64.2 innings over 10 starts.

The Yankees’ ace ranks third on the season in strikeouts and can pass Tyler Glasnow with seven today for second place. Cole ranks fourth in WHIP (0.80), 11th in innings pitched (64.2) and batting average against (.192).

This will be Cole’s 11th start, tying a ton of pitchers for most in the league. Cole allowed two games this month with no runs, and I see a third coming here against Detroit with a double-digit K performance.

Pick: Gerrit Cole Over 9.5 Strikeouts (1u)
