The injury news simply isn’t getting any better for the Miami Hurricanes.
It’s already a near-certainty that they will be without their starting quarterback for the Maryland game. Now we learn it’s an absolute certainty they’ll be sans their leading rusher.
After struggling for the past couple of weeks with an injury, the nature of which the school will not disclose, starting running back Damien Berry has been ruled out of the game against the Terps. Head coach Randy Shannon made the decision after Berry was unable to practice the past two games.
“You just can’t keep going and going and going. It gets tough on him,” Shannon said. “We’re not going to make it get worse than what he is when he’s already kind of nicked up. We’ve got backs right now, so the numbers are OK.”
Berry leads the Hurricanes with 690 yards and four rushing touchdowns this season. His 86.2 yards per game ranks him fourth in the ACC.
With Berry out, the Hurricanes’ second- and third-leading rushers -- Lamar Miller and Mike James -- are expected to carry the running game, a facet of their offense that becomes that much more important with a true freshman expected to make his first career start at QB Saturday.
