Earlier this week, we noted that Mark Banker, longtime assistant coach to Oregon State coach Mike Riley, indicated he would love to talk to Hawaii about the open job left after Greg McMackin “retired” just 10 days ago.
At the time, Banker was just one of a few candidates whose name was appearing in the search. That was before the school’s six-member search advisory began the process of finding a new coach.
Now, there are 30 applicants for the job, the Honolulu Star Advertiser reports. Among those candidates is Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow. Others who have applied include associate Hawaii head coach Rich Miano and Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.
Chow is in his first season as Utah’s offensive coordinator. He has a two-year deal with the Utes worth $275,000 annually in base pay. Chow, 65, is a longtime assistant, but he has roots in Hawaii and coached at a local high school in the early 1970’s.
This might be a chance to circle back for Chow if UH is interested enough.
