Buried deep on Cal’s quarterback depth chart, Beau Sweeney has decided to ply his football wares elsewhere, head coach Jeff Tedford announced earlier this week but we missed so we’re just getting to now thank you very much.
In 2009 and then through the first half of the 2010 season, Sweeney had been the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Kevin Riley. However, Sweeney struggled throughout the spring this year, and had fallen behind Zach Maynard, Brock Mansion and Allan Bridgford in the battle to replace Riley as Cal’s starter.
That situation prompted the redshirt junior to leave Cal and seek a situation where he will have the opportunity to play in 2011.
“He’s a backup here and he wants a chance to play,” Tedford said. “He’s a great kid and we love him. We wish him all the best.”
As for where Sweeney may land, Tedford said he would look at a Div. 1-AA school, where he would have the opportunity to play immediately.
During his three years at Cal, including a redshirt season in 2008, Sweeney played in five games and attempted 17 passes. While he didn’t throw a touchdown, he did have one rushing TD in 2010.
As a member of Cal’s 2008 recruiting class, Sweeney was rated as the No. 13 pro-style QB in the country according to Rivals.com.
