Any hopes Kansas entertained that Ty McKinney would be a part of its defensive line rotation in 2012 have officially been dashed.
In a release, first-year Jayhawks head coach Charlie Weis confirmed that the lineman will not enroll at Kansas until January of next year.
“After discussing this matter with Ty McKinney, he has decided to wait until January to enroll at KU,” Weis said in the latest statement updating the player’s status for the 2012 season. “Tomorrow (Sept. 7) he will take his last final exam and believes that any attempt to catch up academically at KU would be futile.”
“Ty has three years to play two--which means when he enrolls in January, he would then have two years of eligibility to be played in two years.”
“Ty intends to take extra classes at a junior college in preparation for January. Per Ty’s request, I will not respond to questions on this matter moving forward.”
The school had announced back in late August that McKinney will graduate from Trinity Valley Community College Sept. 7 and then head immediately to Kansas. The program, the statement said, was already in the process of making plans to get the lineman up to speed as quickly as possible both academically and football-wise, and hoped he might be available for the third game of the season.
Obviously, speeding up the process will no longer be necessary.
