Larry Fedora’s North Carolina coaching staff is whole once again.
More than halfway through spring practice, UNC announced Tuesday that Fedora has hired Tray Scott as his new defensive line coach. Scott replaces Keith Gilmore, who left for a job at Notre Dame as Fedora significantly reworked the defensive side of the coaching ledger this offseason.
“Tray is a bright, young coach who brings an enormous amount of energy and excitement to our program,” Fedora said in a statement. “He comes highly recommended from several coaches I spoke with and I know he will be a good fit for our University.”
Scott spent the past two seasons at FCS-level UT-Martin. This marks his first full-time job at the FBS level.
In addition to Scott, the Tar Heels have added Gene Chizik (defensive coordinator), John Papuchis (linebackers coach) and Charlton Warren (secondary coach) since the end of the regular season.
The shakeup comes after a 2014 season saw the Tar Heels finish 117th in total defense and rushing yards allowed, 101st in passing yards allowed and tied for 116th in scoring.
