Campbell Chooses Vacation Over French Event

PARIS -- U.S. Open golf champion Michael Campbell has pulled out of the upcoming French Open, organizers said Monday.

The New Zealander, who considered giving up the game a few years ago to sell golf balls, held off Tiger Woods to win the U.S. Open by two strokes Sunday.

He had been scheduled to play at the French Open, which begins Thursday in Versailles, but decided go on vacation with his family instead.

‘He is going on holiday with his wife and children. We were informed of his decision [Monday] morning,’ tournament spokeswoman Stephanie Joyeux said in a telephone interview. ‘We are disappointed, but it is understandable. He has just won the U.S. Open and he is on a cloud. The tournament would have been better with him, but we understand.’
