Georgia Tech has created a new event in hopes that it will lead to the team’s first-ever NCAA Championship.
The 2013 NCAA semifinalists will host a one-day, four-team match-play event April 19 at the Capital City Club in Milton, Ga., the site of last year’s NCAA Championship.
Tech, currently No. 4 in Golfstat’s rankings, will compete against No. 5 Georgia, No. 12 Florida State and No. 26 Auburn in match play – the controversial format that has been used to determine the NCAA champion since 2009.
The top-ranked team will face off against the lowest-ranked team, with all five players competing head-to-head. The individual winner receives one point for his squad, and the first team to three points wins. The top two teams then face off in the finals, with the losers dropping into the consolation match.
Said Tech coach Bruce Heppler in a release, “We wanted to have a chance to compete between the tournament on Ohio and the ACC Championship, and we don’t get an opportunity to compete at match play very often.”
