At the age of 16, amateur Hannah O’Sullivan made Symetra tour history on Sunday.
O’Sullivan shot a final-round 69 to win the Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club at 15-under 201. A leader at one point by seven shots, she went 4 under on the front and 1 over on the back to cruise to a four-stroke victory.
In the process, she made two new notes in the history books.
First, O’Sullivan is now the youngest winner of a Symetra event, a record previously held by Cristie Kerr, who won the 1995 Ironwood Futures Classic at 17.
Second, O’Sullivan is the first amateur to win a Symetra event since Kellee Booth did so at the 1999 Pacific Bell Futures Classic.
O’Sullivan, a USC verbal commit, won the Mesa, Arizona event just 10 miles away from her home in Chandler. A semifinalist at last year’s U.S. Women’s Amateur, O’Sullivan was also a member of last year’s winning U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team in Scotland.
