OAKMONT, Pa. – Sergio Garcia didn’t lose this major, but he still hasn’t won one, either.
After many major near-misses over his stellar career, Garcia can add another one to the list; although, this one will not be so painful. Garcia played great for all four rounds at the U.S. Open and shot 69-70-72-70 for an even-par total. He tied for fifth place, four shots behind Dustin Johnson.
“I was telling the Spanish media that it’s been a while since I’ve been in a major, four rounds out there, in contention,” Garcia said. “So it was great. It was a great experience. Obviously, there’s a lot of nerves, but I really enjoyed it.

“I think that I handled it quite well, and unfortunately, came up a little bit short. But I’m still happy with it, with the week.”
Garcia made three birdies on the front nine in the final round and was within striking distance of leaders Johnson and Shane Lowry. Another birdie on the 13th inched him closer, but three consecutive bogeys on Nos. 14-16 ended all hopes of an unlikely victory.
“I just got to keep putting myself in this situation and, you know, at some point in time, I’m sure that, you know, the coin will end up, will fall off on heads instead of tails,” Garcia said.
This marks Garcia’s 21st top-10 finish in a major championship.
