One man not concerned by Rory Mcllroy’s most unsteady season to date: the 2014 European Ryder Cup captain. Paul McGinley said Wednesday that unpredictability is in the world No. 2’s DNA.
“Rory’s never going to be a flat-line golfer like Nick Faldo,” McGinley said, according to a story in the Irish Independent. “I think it’s in his DNA to be an up-and-down player and I think that’s going to be part of his career for the rest of his life.”
Coming off a five-win campaign in which he captured Player of the Year honors on both sides of the pond, McIlroy, 24, has yet to win in 2013 but has posted four top-10s – including a runner-up in San Antonio – to go along with two missed cuts, both on the European Tour.
Padraig Harrington reportedly agreed with McGinley’s assessment, that McIlroy’s career might forever be a roller-coaster ride.
“If Rory embraces and accepts that, I think there will be less of the lows and more of the consistent highs,” Harrington said, according to the report. “The more he fights it, the more there will be highs and lows. The great thing about Rory, he’s only ever one golf shot away from playing great. He’s proved that numerous times in his short career.”
McIlroy is in the field this week at The Irish Open, which is being held at Carton House Golf Club. In the first two rounds he will play with good friend Shane Lowry and Thomas Bjorn.
