RYE, N.Y. -- Defending champion Carolyn Creekmore won both of her matches Tuesday to move onto the quarterfinals at the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur.
Creekmore bested Martha Lang, 1-up, in the second round with a six-foot birdie putt on the last hole. The 53-year-old then beat Liz Haines, 4 and 2. That was a rematch of last year’s final in which Creekmore took by a slim 1-up margin.
The defending champion was joined in the quarterfinals by seven-time USGA champion and stroke-play medalist Carol Semple Thompson. Semple Thompson held off Nancy Smith, 1-up, in round two.
‘Neither Nancy or I played our best, but she was good to me,’ said Semple Thompson. ‘Competition is what adds the extra zest to the game for me.’
Semple Thompson then handed Karen Ferree a 3 and 2 defeat in the third round.
Creekmore will battle Diane Lang in her quarterfinal match. The winner of that match will play the winner of the Annette Gaiotti-Reggie Parker match.
Semple Thompson, who won this event four straight years from 1999-2002, will battle Marianne Towersey in the quarters. The winner of that duel will take on Robin Donnelley or Cecilia Mourgue D’Algue in the semifinals.
