Mark Zuckerman of CSN Washington reports that Livan Hernandez says it’s “99 percent” that he will be a part of Nationals’ spring training as an instructor. Hernandez turns 39 on February 20 and did not pitch in 2013, so it’s reasonable to believe his time as a player is done.
Hernandez last pitched out of the bullpen for the Braves and Brewers in 2012, posting a combined 6.42 ERA in 67 1/3 innings. Over his career, though, Hernandez was known as a workhorse, logging at least 200 innings in eight straight seasons from 2000-07.
No word on if the Nats plan to have Hernandez teach Stephen Strasburg how to throw an eephus (skip 30 seconds in the video below).
