Rockies option second baseman Josh Rutledge to Triple-A

Josh Rutledge showed signs of promise in 2012 when he hit eight home runs, stole seven bases and registered a .775 OPS in 73 games as a 23-year-old.

But the middle infielder has failed to meet the hype so far in 2013 and was officially optioned Wednesday evening to Triple-A Colorado Springs according to beat writer Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

Rutledge did not play in Wednesday’s 4-1 victory over the Diamondbacks and is sporting a weak .242/.298/.357 batting line in 43 games this year.

D.J. LeMahieu will serve as the Rockies’ regular second baseman going forward.
