Walt Weiss steps down as Rockies manager

The Colorado Rockies just announced that Walt Weiss had “stepped down” as Rockies manager. The terminology was such because Weiss contract ran out with the season yesterday. So it’s technically not a resignation, I suppose. More of a “hey, let’s not” with respect to talking about the future.

A future which probably would’ve been short if Weiss had not stepped down, as general manager Jeff Bridich had not broached the subject of a contract extension for Weiss, suggesting that the Rockies would’ve fired him. Weiss managed the club to a .437 winning percentage from 2013 – 2016 and the Rockies’ just finished their sixth consecutive losing season. As Ashley noted yesterday, Weiss had reportedly been excluded from some key decisions in recent days, so he likely saw the writing on the wall.

So, there’s a job opening in Colorado. Let the very, very quiet managerial search begin, so as not to distract from the playoffs.
