Romar’s not worried about recruits he missed

Gotta hand it to Washington coach Lorenzo Romar. He’s still upbeat despite missing out on a few recruits. Terrence Jones and Enes Kanter bail on oral commitments and head to Kentucky? Local prospect Josh Smith heads to UCLA?

Big deal.

“Two of the recruits we got this year, we wouldn’t have landed if we had not done well this year. I say that to say we just have to continue working hard in putting a team out there that’s going to be successful, and I think that thing takes care of itself over a period of time,” he told the Seattle Times.

Like I said, upbeat. And that’s fairly impressive given that the Huskies were essentially the second choice - or, in the case of Jones and Kanter, the first choice, but not the final choice, which all sounds like an episode of “Lost” - of three five-star recruits. Smith, Kanter and Jones are all the type of player who could be the difference between a Final Four and an Elite Eight.

But hey, Romar’s not sweating it.

“We’ve got a 7-footer that’s agile, that can run the floor, that’s aggressive and mean and has the ability to control the paint in Aziz N’Diaye,” Romar said. “We’ve got a dynamic shooter and athlete in Terrence Ross who wants to be here ... and he’s probably even better than what his ranking is.

“And then Desmond Simmons, a guy whose ego is tied into winning and doing things right. When you’ve got three guys coming in with a lot of guys who are already coming back, you can’t help but to be excited with what we have.”

If those three can push the Huskies to new heights (like the Elite Eight) then maybe next season Romar

doesn’t miss on one of those big prize guys.
