Bowden leaves 2010 retirement door open

On multiple occasions throughout the 2009 season, Bobby Bowden has made it clear that he would like to coach one more season at Florida State before heading off into retirement.

“Right now I think you know where I’m leaning,” Bowden said during an Oct. 13 radio interview. “I’m leaning toward coming back [next season].”

“I know I am in the last years - I say plural - of my career,” Bowden told a Raleigh, NC, radio station on Oct. 21. “My days are numbered. I did not want to say, ‘Well, I’m going to leave at this time.’ I already know when I’m going to leave. And [coach-in-waiting] Jimbo Fisher knows when I’m going to leave. He and I have talked about it.”

However, following this afternoon’s shellacking at the hands of the Florida Gators, Bowden is singing a slightly less strident tune as the legendary coach told reporters after the game that he has “some soul-searching” to do.

“I want to coach next year,” Bowden said according to the Tallahassee Democrat. “But let me say, I need to go home and do some soul-searching.”

Bowden will reportedly meet with school officials on Monday to determine how long his future will be at FSU, and an announcement on that future could come as early as Monday or Tuesday.
