Five days ago, Art Briles issued a statement which seemed to indicate he was committed to Baylor and was not looking for another coaching opportunity elsewhere.
If that’s indeed the case, either Texas Tech didn’t get the memo or got it and really doesn’t care. Or, as it’s looking, Briles’ statement was just more coach-speak rhetoric.
Citing an unnamed source, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal is reporting that Tech’s athletic director, Gerald Myers, has spoken with his Baylor counterpart and requested permission to speak to Briles.
At this point in time, it’s uncertain whether Briles will take up the offer and interview for the vacancy. There’s also the issue of the $4 million buyout in Briles’ contract, although Tech likely wouldn’t have even contacted the school if they thought that number was prohibitive.
One person who had no qualms about interviewing, and who has no financial strings attached, was Tommy Tuberville. The former Auburn and Ole Miss coach interviewed for the opening on Tuesday, and Myers said he “thought it went well.”
The Avalanche-Journal also reports that Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin and former Clemson coach Tommy Bowden remain under consideration, but neither had been contacted as of Tuesday night.
