‘By the Numbers’ -- Spiller joins Bush

0 -- Points the Ohio State defense has allowed since gift-wrapping an 86-yard drive for USC’s Matt Barkley and Joe McKnight on Sept. 12.

.333 -- Batting average of the members of the

2 -- Players in college football history that have surpassed the following career yardage totals: 2,500 rushing, 1,500 kickoff returns, 1,000 receiving and 500 punt returns. The first to do so was USC’s Reggie Bush. Clemson’s C.J. Spiller joined him on Saturday.

3 -- The number of sports Stanford running back Toby Gerhart is considering playing. Already the school’s all-time single-season rushing leader and a power-hitting outfielder on the Cardinal baseball team, he is going through the process of seeing where else he might fit in on The Farm.

4 -- Consecutive night games in the USC-Cal series, which is noteworthy due to the fact that from 1915 to 2005, the Trojans and Golden Bears met exclusively in day games . . . 93 in all.

4.5 -- Points Illinois is averaging versus FBS competition. It won’t be easy to improve greatly upon that statistic on Saturday when an angry pack of Nittany Lions visit Champaign.

5 -- Games against ranked teams remaining for Oklahoma (No. 17 Miami, No. 2 Texas, No. 18 Kansas, No. 23 Nebraska, No. 14. Oklahoma State).

5 -- Offensive plays for North Carolina in the third quarter of its 24-7 loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday. Unsurprisingly, the Yellow Jackets maintained a huge advantage in possession time, controlling the football for 42 of the game’s 60 minutes.

6 -- Spots “No. 19" California was ranked ahead of “No. 25" Oregon in the USA Today Top 25. Apparently the sports information directors coaches who vote in the poll missed the Ducks’ 42-3 blowout of the Bears on Saturday. The AP voters had it right with Oregon at No. 16 and Cal at No. 24.

7 -- Wins by Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz over Penn State’s Joe Paterno in their last eight meetings.

11 -- Games between touchdown catches for Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones, who finally rediscovered the end zone on tricky 50-yard reception out of the “Wildcat formation” on Saturday in a 35-7 victory over Arkansas.

12 -- Touchdown passes thrown by N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson in his last three games. He has not thrown an interception in his last 364 attempts, dating back to last season.

15 -- Completions thrown by Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli on his final 16 attempts against California.

16:18 -- Minutes of possession time Cincinnati had in its 28-20 victory over Fresno State. The last time that much action occurred in such a short amount of time, Khloe Kardashian was entrapping Lamar Odom.

24 -- Times we’ve watched this passionate defense of Pete Carroll. (Warning: may be offensive to some, includes profane language.)

36 -- Seconds remaining when Purdue head coach Danny Hope called a timeout that seemed to assist Notre Dame in its efforts to beat the Boilermakers, 24-21.

36 -- Points South Florida would theoretically beat Brigham Young by if you go by the results both teams had against Florida State. The Seminoles beat the Cougars in Provo, 54-28, one week before losing at home to the Bulls, 17-7.

40 -- Years since Oregon State has won on the road at Arizona State. The Beavers take yet another shot on Saturday.

53 -- Yards of total offense generated by UTEP in a 64-7 loss at No. 2 Texas.

114 -- USC’s national ranking in third-down conversion percentage (out of 120 FBS teams). The Trojans have converted on 11 of their 44 third-down opportunities (25 percent). Florida is No. 1 at 59 percent (29-of-49).

183 -- Kickoff return yards for Kansas State’s Brandon Banks against Tennessee Tech. You can’t do much better than that on just two returns. He bolted 91 yards for a score in the first quarter and then opened up the second half with a 92-yard touchdown. The Golden Eagles’ best defense against Banks’ returns was to only score once and kickoff twice in what ended up as a 49-7 defeat.

300 -- Difference in rushing yards between Georgia Tech and North Carolina. The Yellow Jacket triple-option attack racked up 317 yards on the ground in a 24-7 victory over the Tar Heels last Saturday. UNC could only muster 17 yards on 18 carries.

500 -- College football victories posted by the Tressel family. Jim Tressel chalked up his 221st on Saturday with Ohio State’s 30-0 win over Illinois (135 at Youngstown State and 86 at Ohio State). Jim’s father, Lee Tressel, posted 155 victories at Baldwin-Wallace College, where he won an NCAA Division III national title in 1978. Jim’s older brother, Dick Tressel, came out on top 124 times at Hamline University, before joining his brother’s staff with the Buckeyes in 2001.

1,063 -- Combined yards of total offense in Houston’s 29-28 victory over Texas Tech. The game also featured a total of 105 pass attempts, but only one interception.

1,000,000 -- Dollars paid to TCU by Clemson for coming to Death Valley and dealing the Tigers a 14-10 defeat. The Horned Frogs have two teams -- Central Michigan and Idaho -- to thank for clearing the way for this matchup to be hastily arranged in February.

7,560,000 -- Dollars that the 45 members of Florida’s football staff, which includes everyone from head coach Urban Meyer down to the administrative assistants, earned during the school’s 2009 fiscal year. That reflects a collective raise of $2.78 million from the previous season, which did not include SEC and BCS titles. The current average salary within the Gator football program is $168,000.
