Corner leaving Arizona, likely headed to LaTech

The seasonal player movement continues into yet another spring weekend, with Arizona the latest school to see a player leave its football program.

First-year Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez announced Friday that in the past week cornerback Cortez Johnson has decided to take his leave of the Wildcats football team. Rodriguez said the New Orleans native is transferring to be closer to home.

The football home, Rodriguez said, is “some Louisiana school.” The Arizona Daily Star reports that Louisiana school is expected to be Louisiana Tech.

The Bulldogs are coached by Sonny Dykes, who served as UA’s offensive coordinator from 2007-09.

As a true freshman in 2011, Johnson played in eight games. He was expected to compete for significant playing time, if not a starting job, in UA’s secondary this year.

Johnson will be forced to sit out the 2012 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules if he ultimately moves on to a Div. 1-A program.
