Unfortunately, there’s sobering news to post on this evening as a member of Georgia Tech’s extended football family has passed away.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Drew Hill died at the age of 54 Friday night at an Atlanta hospital. Hill had been hospitalized after suffering a pair of massive strokes.
Hill had reportedly become ill on a golf course Thursday and went to the hospital a first time, where he was diagnosed with high blood pressure and released. Headaches after the first visit forced Hill back to the hospital, where he passed away.
Hill played for the Yellow Jackets from 1975-1978, and is still fourth on the school’s all-time list in yards per reception (19.3). Following his time at Tech, Hill was a 12th-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in the 1979 NFL draft and went on to a 15-year career that included time with the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons.
“I’m shocked,” former Oilers teammate Warren Moon said. “I can’t believe it. Drew meant so much to us as a player and as a person. I counted on him so much. He was the consummate professional. It’s just so sad.”
Our condolences go out to Hill’s family and friends for their loss.
