In the post right below this one, we made note of rumors making the Internet rounds that an Iowa running back had suffered a potentially season-ending injury late last week.
While the alleged injury to Jewel Hampton has yet to be confirmed, an injury to a different member of the Hawkeye football program has.
According to the Quad City Times, junior guard Julian Vandervelde has undergone surgery on an unspecified part of his body and will miss at least a portion of the 2009 season.
“We were hopeful that Julian’s injury could be healed through normal rehab, but it became apparent surgical repair was the best path to take,” head coach Kirk Ferentz said of the player who was penciled in as a starter exiting spring ball. “Julian may miss some playing time, but we are optimistic he will return to full strength very early in the season.”
Additionally, Ferentz also confirmed that a potential starter at linebacker -- Jacody Coleman -- had left the program.
Coleman is the 10th player to leave the program since the end of the 2008 season, The Times reports.
