Longhorn corner seeking ‘fresh start’, will transfer

For the third time in the last couple of weeks, a member of the Texas football program has decided to take his leave in search for an opportunity at more playing time.

In a press release Friday afternoon, the Longhorns confirmed that cornerback A.J. White will be transferring from the university. White acknowledged his need for “a fresh start”, which is football code for “I’ve taken a good look at the depth chart”.

“I decided to transfer because I felt like I needed to get a new start,” White said. “I want to give thanks to [defensive backs] coach Duane] Akina and Coach [Mack] Brown for everything they’ve done for me here. Texas is a great school and a great program, and I appreciate everyone in the program and the time I’ve had here, but I just felt like I needed a change and a fresh start.”

Had White remained with the program, he likely would’ve headed into summer camp No. 3 at one of the corner spots on the depth chart.

During his two seasons at UT, White played in 17 games, including 11 games as a true sophomore last season. White, who played his high school ball in DeSoto, Tex., came to the Longhorns as a three-star member of its 2010 recruiting class.

As is oft-times the case, it’s unclear what school or schools may be on White’s football to-do lists.

“While we hate to see anyone leave, we understand A.J.'s decision and will support him in any way we can,” Brown said. “We appreciate what he’s done for the program and wish him luck in the future.”
