Usually, coaches whose units underperform (that’s what she said) are fired/given the chance to ‘resign’ at the end of the season. But, hey, no time like the present, right?
Houston coach Tony Levine (pictured) announced Monday that offensive coordinator Mike Nesbitt has “resigned” following an embarrassing season opening loss to new FBS member Texas State by a final score of 30-13. Taking over Nesbitt’s play-calling duties will be running backs coach Travis Bush.
“We wish Mike the best in his future endeavors and thank him for his contributions to the Houston program,” said Levine in a statement. “We are confident in Travis and his play-calling ability moving forward.”
Bush will move from RBs coach to quarterbacks coach and UH director of player personnel Ken McClintock will coach Bush’s old position. Coincidentally enough, Texas State is Bush’s alma mater. He was also the offensive coordinator at UTSA last season before coming to Houston, and previously spent three seasons as co-OC at Texas State.
Houston was putrid on offense against the Bobcats just one year removed from losing quarterback Case Keenum and head coach Kevin Sumlin. New quarterback David Piland completed just 17-of-44 passes for 211 yards, a touchdown and interception. The Cougars also converted just one third down out of 13 attempts and held the ball for just under 17 minutes the entire game.
