Race is on for top recruiting class

Wednesday is National Signing Day -- or, as we like to refer to it as, “The Day That Could Be a Show Hosted by Chris Hansen” -- so the push to pull in the top recruiting class in the country is in full force.

Despite what were by their standards down years on the field in 2010, Alabama (the current No. 1) and Texas (No. 2) appeared to be locked in a two-school battle for the honor of sitting atop Rivals.com’s team rankings for 2011, with Florida State -- No. 1 according to Scout.com and ESPN -- sitting at No. 3 and still with an outside shot of claiming the top spot when the day began.

The developments since the official start to signing day, however, have prompted the first of what’s expected to be numerous changes inside the top ten of the rankings.

While the Tide has maintained their spot atop Rivals’ rankings, FSU has risen to No. 2 and USC has climbed from No. 5 to No. 3 while Texas has “dropped” to No. 4. Thanks to a couple of somewhat unexpected pickups of five-star recruits, Clemson has made the biggest move of signing day thus far, climbing from No. 10 to No. 6 according to Rivals.

As should be expected, four SEC schools -- ‘Bama, LSU (No. 5), Auburn (No. 7) and Georgia (No. 8 ) -- currently sit inside the top ten, with Tennessee just barely on the outside at No. 11; only the ACC with FSU and Clemson has more than one school represented.
