In perhaps a move to prove they belong with the college football heavyweights, the WAC conference has found themselves in the midst of an officiating “controversy”.
And, much like their SEC big brother, they’ve brought out the suspension stick to deal with the situation.
According to a press release issued by the conference, replay official Michael Goshima has been handed a one-game suspension for blowing a review in the Boise State-San Jose State game.
The call in question came on the placement of the football short of a first down. The play was reviewed, and Goshima didn’t overturn the placement on the field.
After reviewing the play, the WAC determined that the replay clearly showed that it was indeed a first down.
“The WAC expects the same type of performance from our instant replays officials as we do from the on-field officials,’” commissioner Karl Benson said in a statement. “And while errors are going to occur - both on the field and in the replay booth - when they do, there must be accountability. Instant replay is used to ‘get it right’ on the field and in this case the official had a chance to reverse a call at a very critical time in the game and did not. Thus, he will be suspended for his next assignment.”
