USF lost out on former Florida State quarterback Clint Trickett, but could be in the running for another transfer at the same position.
According to ESPN.com’s Joe Schad, and citing a source close to the player, the Bulls along with Mississippi State are two of the schools to which Steven Bench is considering transferring. Schad writes that “Bench is expected to train with quarterbacks coach George Whitfield in California this weekend and possibly take visits to one of those schools the following weekend.”
It was announced late last month that Bench would be leaving the Penn State football program. Because of the NCAA sanctions leveled on the Nittany Lions, Bench will be eligible to play immediately in 2013 if he transfers to an FBS school. He will have three years of eligibility remaining plus his redshirt season.
As a true freshman last season, bench appeared in two games and attempted seven passes. He and Tyler Ferguson engaged in a battle for the starting job this spring, with neither player pulling away from the other. Incoming freshman Christian Hackenberg will also enter the Nittany Lions’ quarterback fray in summer camp, and many consider him the favorite to begin the season as the starter.
