While South Carolina received good news earlier this week regarding their starting quarterback, the news on a starter on the other side of the ball is a lot less encouraging.
Following practice Thursday, defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson indicated that safety DeVonte Holloman likely would not play on Saturday against Florida. Holloman suffered a concussion in last Saturday’s loss to Arkansas.
Johnson did allow that Holloman could be available in an emergency-type situation, pending the advice of the program’s medical staff.
“Because he didn’t practice (all week), and even if they cleared him now, I’d probably be concerned about him playing without any practice time,” Johnson said. “Whether he’ll be dressed and available for an emergency or something, I guess that’d be up to the doctors.”
Holloman, who has started the last seven games for the Gamecocks and 19 in his career, will be replaced by Brison Williams. It will be the redshirt freshman’s first career start.
