When it comes to who will replace Mike Leach at Texas Tech, the usual suspects have been tossed around.
Baylor head coach Art Briles and Arizona offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes are the two coaches mentioned most often, with names like Houston’s Kevin Sumlin and Red Raider interim head coach/defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill tossed into the mix as well.
Now, ESPN.com’s Big 12 blogger Tim Griffin throws out a couple of additional names that might just land somewhere on Tech’s radar.
According to Griffin, former Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville and current Southern Miss Larry Fedora are two coaches to keep an eye on.
Tuberville’s name has seemingly been attached to every single job that’s come open the past month. Insiders tell Griffin that Tuberville is itching to get back into coaching and would indeed be interested in the Tech vacancy.
Fedora has no direct ties to Texas Tech, but was born in Texas and coached in both high school and college (Baylor) in the state.
UPDATE 12:58 p.m. ET: Well, it’s confirmed. Tuberville really, really, really wants the Tech job.
The coach told both Tony Barnhart of CBS Sports.com and Joe Schad of ESPN.com that there is interest from his side in the opening.
“I would be very interested,” Tuberville told Schad. “I have family there. I have a lot of ties there. I’ve recruited Dallas and Houston and I think it would be a pretty good fit. Mike [Leach] did a good job and I think I could make the situation even better.”
Tuberville told Barnhart that "[i]t feels like it’s time to get back in.”
