USC promotes Tee Martin to OC

Clay Helton didn’t have to look very far to find the person he wanted to be in charge of his USC offense.

The Trojans announced via Twitter Friday that current USC assistant Tee Martin has been promoted to the position of offensive coordinator. Helton will be the 37-year-old Martin’s third head coach at USC as the title-winning former Tennessee quarterback was hired by Lane Kiffin and retained by Kiffin’s replacement, Steve Sarkisian.

“I am fortunate to have been around many good coaches throughout my career, but I have never been around a coach quite as complete as Tee Martin,” a statement from Helton began. “He has a unique ability to lead, organize, recruit, teach, game plan and call plays. In the second half of this season, Tee took on a greater coordinating role in game planning and play calling and I was very impressed with the job he did. I am beyond confident in his ability to lead our offense to new heights.”

Martin is in the midst of his fourth season with the Trojans. He’s been the wide receivers coach each of those seasons, and added the title of passing-game coordinator in 2014.

The school confirmed that Martin would remain in charge of receivers even with the promotion.

Helton was named interim head coach when Sarkisian was fired midseason. At the end of last month, he had the interim tag removed and was named permanent head coach.
