Race to Dubai moving to points-based system

On the Clock: Race to Dubai vs. FedEx Cup?

The Race to Dubai is beginning to resemble the FedEx Cup – only without the messy reset at the end of the year.

The European Tour announced Tuesday that beginning with this week’s season-opening Nedbank Golf Challenge, the circuit will switch to a points-based system, with every euro earned by player during the regular season being converted to a Race to Dubai point.

This past season, the European Tour used euros during the regular season but converted them into points before the start of the Final Series, creating some confusion. Each of the four tournaments in the Final Series will offer 10 million points.

“We believe that changing to a points system will help simplify and indeed enhance the narrative structure of the Race to Dubai, and particularly the Final Series,” said European Tour COO Keith Waters.

During regular PGA Tour events, the winner receives 500 FedEx Cup points, with 300 to the runner-up, 190 to third place and 135 to fourth.

According to the European Tour’s website, the winner this week in South Africa will receive 864,975 euros – or, with this new system, 864,975 points.
