PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – After a couple of frustrating weeks, Patrick Reed is pleased to see his scoring once again match his ball-striking.
Reed wasn’t much of a factor this week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but he carded eight birdies Sunday en route to a final-round 65. That was his second 65 of the week, and Reed finished in a tie for eighth despite a wobbly 73 in the third round on the host course.
Reed explained that he’s had some trouble on the greens since a runner-up finish at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, but he had no such concerns during a final round that included five back-nine birdies.
“I hit a lot of iron shots really close, so there wasn’t that much stress on my putts,” Reed said. “I think I had three kick-ins today that were within 3 feet that had no break. Any time you have that around a place like Pebble, it just makes those other holes a little easier, especially when you know you’re going to scramble a little bit.”
Reed had not played since withdrawing because of a foot injury at the Farmers Insurance Open, but he appeared to be 100 percent this week in California. After a torrid close to the fall, he now has four top-10 finishes in six official starts this season and plenty of momentum as the West Coast Swing nears its conclusion.
“I feel like I was hitting good putts, they just weren’t going in,” he said. “To see the ball go in today and to see the ball go in at Monterey Peninsula for that last eight holes I played where I was 6 under through that stretch, it’s nice to see because I’m hitting the ball so well.”
