John Daly will not be in action this week after turning down an offer from the South African Open to compete in their event in lieu of losing his invitation to play in the concurrent Australian PGA Championship.
Two weeks ago, Daly withdrew from the Australian Open after claiming he had hit all of his remaining golf balls in the water at the 11th hole of The Lakes. In the immediate aftermath, the organizers of the Australian PGA Championship rescinded their invitation to Daly to play at Coolum.
‘The PGA does not need this kind of behavior tarnishing the achievement of Other players and the reputation of our tournaments. John is not welcome in Coolum,’ said Brian Thorburn, CEO of the PGA of Australia, in a statement after Daly’s first-round episode.
Instead, Daly will take the week off and next tee it up in the Hong Kong Open.
