DUBLIN, Ohio – When the dust settles, Davis Love III will have played four tournaments in three weeks, a stretch that includes stops at the Byron Nelson, Colonial, Memorial and two 36-hole qualifiers for the U.S. and British opens.
The activity has taken a toll on DL3’s 45-year-old body and he is suffering from an ailing neck this week in Ohio, but – he admits – some of his pain is self inflicted.
“As my mom always says, ‘You over do it on the golf course and then come home and you don’t rest,’” said Love, who opened with an even-par 72. “I don’t sit still real well. It hasn’t been go home to Sea Island (Ga.) and lay on a beach.”
During Love’s “down town” away from the Tour this year he’s gone snowboarding in Utah, turkey hunted in south Georgia and ridden his Harley Davidson across America.
Love participated in the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America, a week-long ride that began on May 10 and covered 3,286 miles.
“The worst part was parking it,” he said. “I wanted to just keep going.”
