NEWPORT, Wales – Oops.
Rickie Fowler may have shown a veteran’s nerve at the first tee of his first Ryder Cup, but he made a rookie blunder at the fourth hole.
After Jim Furyk put him in trouble with their drive there in the alternate-shot competition, Fowler pulled a ball out of his pocket and dropped it in taking his relief. Though it was a Titleist, same as Furyk was playing, Fowler was required to retrieve Furyk’s ball and use that.
The penalty was loss of hole, giving Europe’s Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer a 2-up advantage.
