CHASKA, Minn. – Phil Mickelson plans to start the FedEx Cup Playoffs by playing The Barclays in two weeks, but he isn’t sure what his schedule will be after that.
In fact, after making an eagle at his 16th hole (No. 7) on Friday at the PGA Championship, he wasn’t even sure what his schedule will be this weekend.
Mickelson left the course with a tiny glimmer of hope he could make the cut, though he knew he needed tough afternoon conditions to help him out.
Mickelson was at 6-over for the PGA Championship and looking doomed in his bid to make the cut before he made the eagle. He was two shots outside the cutline when he signed his scorecard.
With both his wife, Amy, and his mother, Mary, being treated for breast cancer, Mickelson’s golf will be played around medical treatments.
“I don’t want to look too far down the road for at least a year because we are day to day, but right now things are OK and I plan on playing Barclays and we’ll see where I go from there,” Mickelson said.
Mickelson put up another 74 on Friday. He said his balky putter was the problem again. He had a pair of three-putts and took 33 putts overall, one less than in the first round.
“I don’t know if I’ll make (the cut) or not,” Mickelson said. “But I’m not going to beat many people putting the way I am.”
