SYDNEY – It was probably not the fast or clean start Tiger Woods envisioned, but through nine holes at the Australian Open he was 3 under and just two strokes off the lead held by Greg Chalmers.

Woods closed the gap with birdies at Nos. 3, 4 and 8, the only par 5 on the front nine. On Saturday Woods lamented his inability to take advantage of The Lakes’ par 5s, playing them in even par.

Still to come for Woods is a drivable par 4, No. 13 and the easiest hole on the course this week, and three par 5s; while Chalmers, who lives about 30 minutes from The Lakes, is through seven holes.
