An invitation to host the 2021 U.S. Open has been extended to Torrey Pines South, a source with the USGA confirmed Tuesday. The story was first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune
The proposal will be voted upon at a San Diego City Council meeting next Monday. If the vote passes, it is expected that the USGA would announce the news soon afterward.
The vote was called “a critical piece of the puzzle” by one USGA official, but considered standard protocol for a public course.
Torrey Pines previously hosted the U.S. Open in 2008, when Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in a playoff, despite competing with various knee and leg injuries.
This year’s U.S. Open will be held at Pinehurst No. 2 from June 12-15. Other future sites include Chambers Bay (2015), Oakmont Country Club (2016), Erin Hills (2017), Shinnecock Hills Golf Club (2018), Pebble Beach Golf Links (2019) and Winged Foot Golf Club (2020).
