SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Phil Mickelson may not have tied the PGA Tour single-round scoring mark on Thursday, but he did tie another impressive record.
Mickelson’s 11-under 60 in the opening round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open was the second 60 in his career, tying Zach Johnson as the only players with multiple rounds of 60 or better.
His previous 60 also came in this event, when he birdied the final five holes during the second round in 2005.
Mickelson went on to win that tournament – and if you’re looking for evidence that he’ll win this week, it’s available. In each of his four previous lowest PGA Tour rounds – the 60 here eight years ago, plus a 61 at the 2001 Travelers Championship and 62s at the 2005 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and 2009 Northern Trust Open – he later claimed the title.
