Brandon Backe threw yesterday for the first time since suffering a pulled left hamstring Sunday.
“He is getting better,” manager Jimy Williams said. “He was throwing out here today on flat ground. He is making progress. It’s just going to take time for that hamstring to heal.”

Brandon Backe suffered a hamstring injury yesterday and probably won’t take part in drills today.
Backe, acquired from Tampa Bay for Geoff Blum in December, is competing for a spot in Houston’s bullpen.

Brandon Backe (oblique) threw on the side Friday and will do so again Sunday. He’s scheduled for a simulated game on Tuesday.
Backe is eligible to come off the DL next week, but he probably won’t. Manager Phil Garner doesn’t expect to activate Backe right away because he doesn’t think he’ll be able to go more than 50-60 pitches and he doesn’t want to strain the bullpen.

Brandon Backe threw off a mound Wednesday for the first time since he went on the disabled list last week with a strained muscle on his left side.
''I threw 40 pitches, and 35 went really good,’' he said. ''On the last five, I started to get tired, and I started to feel it again, so we shut it down.’' He’ll take today off and then throw off a mound again Friday in San Francisco.

Brandon Backe, on the disabled list since July 28 with a strained rib cage muscle, threw off flat ground Thursday.
He hopes to throw off a mound on Saturday as he slowly makes his way back from his injury.

Brandon Backe (oblique) had hoped to pitch a three-inning simulated game before batting practice, but only managed to throw eight pitches into the second inning.
''I thought it was going to be a great day and hopefully I would pitch this weekend,’' Backe said. ''But that’s not going to happen now.’' Backe will throw a bullpen session on Thursday. If that goes well, maybe he’ll return next week.

Brandon Backe (oblique) is scheduled to throw a simulated game today.
Barring any setbacks in the simulated game, manager Phil Garner and general manager Tim Purpura will evaluate whether he needs another simulated game or should begin a rehab assignment before coming off the DL.

Brandon Backe (oblique) won’t throw a bullpen session today as he’d hoped, and has been prescribed more rest time.
He plans to throw off flat ground today but isn’t sure of a timetable beyond that.’'They tell you leave it alone and not touch, but I still have to get my conditioning in somehow or another so at least I can go back to performing the way I should,’' Backe said.

Brandon Backe (oblique) is still at least a week away from re-joining the Astros.
''We have to take it slow,’' general manager Tim Purpura said. ''He’s got to be ready to go when he’s ready. We can’t push this too much or we’ll end up losing him for the rest of the year.’' We’re thinking it’s going to be close to September before he’s ready.
