Francisco Cordova will begin the season as a reliever, Padres manager Bruce Bochy said.
Kevin Jarvis and Charles Nagy are hurt, so Clay Condrey and Mike Bynum are the only candidates left for the final spot in San Diego’s rotation. It’s possible that the team could acquire a starter.

Francisco Cordova, competing for the fifth spot in the Padres’ rotation, gave up five runs in 1 2/3 innings today.
Cordova has been shaky in both of his outings. He needs to bounce back quickly, or Kevin Jarvis will win the rotation spot by default.

Free agent Francisco Cordova pitched two hitless innings of relief for Guasave of the Mexican Pacific League yesterday.
Cordova has had a difficult time recovering from Tommy John surgery and spent 2003 pitching in the Mexican League after the Padres released him at the end of spring training. If he makes it back to the majors in 2004, it will probably happen as a reliever.

Francisco Cordova surrendered four runs over four innings in a loss to the Cubs today.
Clay Condrey was more effective in relief of Cordova, giving up two runs in five innings. Those two are competing with Charles Nagy and Mike Bynum for the final spot in San Diego’s rotation.

Francisco Cordova bounced back from a couple of poor outings with three strong innings against Anaheim on Monday.
Cordova allowed one run on two hits and struck out four. He’s still in the running for the final spot in San Diego’s rotation.

Padres manager Bruce Bochy said Francisco Cordova has the edge for the last spot in the rotation simply because he has been stretched out more so far this spring.
Kevin Jarvis is still building up stamina. If he continues to make progress, he has a very good chance of passing Cordova.

Francisco Cordova got rocked today, allowing eight runs -- seven earned -- in 3 2/3 innings.
Worst of all was that he was facing a Giants lineup made up entirely of backups. The door is now wide open for either Charles Nagy or Mike Bynum to claim the final spot in San Diego’s rotation.

Francisco Cordova, competing for the fifth spot in the Padres’ rotation, allowed four runs -- one earned -- in 1 2/3 innings today.
Cordova gave up two hits, walked one and struck out one. A Bret Boone homer accounted for two of the runs. Cordova is a sleeper, but he’ll probably lose out to Kevin Jarvis for the rotation spot.

Padres placed RHP Francisco Cordova on unconditional release waivers.
It didn’t work out, but taking a chance on Cordova was a good move by the Padres. It ended up costing them $220,000. Cordova likely will sign a Triple-A contract with another team. He’s still a candidate to make an impact in the second half of the season, but he needs to get regular work.
