Carlos Martinez is done for the year with a shoulder injury, but the idea of Adam Wainwright pitching for the Cardinals during the postseason is getting closer to becoming a reality.
According to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, Wainwright threw a successful simulated game this afternoon at Busch Stadium. The veteran right-hander threw approximately 27 pitches against the likes of Matt Adams and Randal Grichuk while also doing some fielding work at first base.
Wainwright was originally expected to miss the remainder of the season after tearing his left Achilles in late April, but he has been determined to make it back all along. The hope now is that he’ll be able contribute as a reliever during the Cardinals’ playoff run. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that he could make his return next week. You might remember that he did pretty alright as a reliever in the 2006 postseason.
