In need of roster space for new pickups, the Red Sox designated outfielder Daniel Nava for assignment.
Nava hit .303 in 134 games for the Red Sox in 2013, playing a key role in the team’s World Series title as a 30-year-old, but since then he’s hit just .252 with four homers and a .665 OPS in 142 games.
Nava has good on-base skills and can probably still be useful in a part-time role facing mostly right-handed pitchers, but as a 32-year-old corner outfielder with a career .387 slugging percentage the Red Sox deemed him expendable.
