Double-A San Antonio’s Yung-Chi Chen drove in five runs with a triple, a double and a sac fly on Monday.
Chen, 23, is hitting .282/.333/.485 in 103 at-bats since moving up to San Antonio. He doesn’t figure to be much of a factor in 2007, but he might be the Mariners’ second or third baseman someday if Adrian Beltre gets traded.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman
Yung-Chi Chen drove in five runs for the Javelinas of the AFL with a pair of two-run singles and a sac fly on Wednesday.
Chen, who played in just five minor league games this season before undergoing shoulder surgery, is batting .400 in eight games this fall. He’ll likely open 2008 as the second baseman for Triple-A Tacoma. A future as a utilityman is possible.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman
Mariners purchased the contracts of 2B Yung-Chi Chen and RHP Joseph Woerman.
Assuming the Mariners don’t upgrade this winter, Chen represents a fallback at second base should Jose Lopez struggle again. He hit .339/.444/.424 in the AFL after missing all but the first week of Triple-A Tacoma’s season following shoulder surgery.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman
Mariners optioned 2B Yung-Chi Chen, RHP Joe Woerman and 1B Bryan LaHair to Triple-A Tacoma; reassigned RHP Phillippe Aumont, RHP Brodie Downs, RHP Stephen Kahn, LHP Robert Rohrbaugh, C Jair Fernandez, C Adam Moore, C Brant Ust, OF Bronson Sardinha and IF Mark Kiger to Minor League camp.
Chen was just 2-for-10 this spring, but he did have a homer and three walks. He could prove to be a better option at second base than Willie Bloomquist or Miguel Cairo if Jose Lopez struggles or gets hurt. Aumont, a 2007 first-rounder, allowed three runs in one-third of an inning in his only appearance.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman
Yung-Chi Chen left Triple-A Tacoma’s game Saturday after being hit in the head by a Josh Towers pitch.
He was diagnosed with a mild concussion and will miss at least today’s game.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman
Athletics claimed infielder Yung-Chi Chen off waivers from the Mariners.
Chen hit .249/.309/.329 in 69 games before missing the second half of the season with another injury. He was limited to seven games in 2007. He looked like a solid second base prospect prior to that, but he’s now 25 and he seems like a long shot to have a career in the majors.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman
Yung-Chi Chen went 2-for-5 with a homer Saturday in his debut for Double-A San Antonio.
Chen was hitting .342/.388/.478 with five homers and 21 steals for Single-A Inland Empire. His emergence was another reason the Mariners felt they could trade Asdrubal Cabrera for Eduardo Perez last week. Chen has seen time at both second base and third. His defense at second is just average, and he’ll need to show a little more power in order to make it as a third baseman.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman
Athletics sent infielder Yung Chi Chen outright to Triple-A Sacramento.
Chen was claimed off waivers from the Mariners in November. It’s his first outright assignment, so he’ll stay with the A’s and remain in camp as a non-roster player. Odds are that he’ll be the primary second baseman for Sacramento this season.
  • CWS Relief Pitcher
Athletics optioned RHP Jeff Gray to Triple-A Sacramento; reassigned RHP Brett Hunter, RHP Jared Lansford, RHP Arnold Leon, RHP Tyson Ross, C Josh Donaldson, 1B Tagg Bozied, 2B Adrian Cardenas, 1B Chris Carter, 2B Yung-Chi Chen and 2B Jemile Weeks to minor league camp.
No real surprises in Oakland’s first round of cuts. Gray has to be disappointed to be sent down so soon after allowing one run in 4 2/3 innings. It’s hard to tell what the 27-year-old is still doing on the 40-man roster when he’s so clearly not in the team’s plans.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman
Mariners prospect Yung-Chi Chen is likely to miss the rest of the season after surgery on his left shoulder.
The 23-year-old Chen was 5-for-15 for Triple-A Tacoma. He doesn’t project as a regular for the Mariners, but he has a chance of becoming a quality utilityman.
