Cristiano Ronaldo throws teammates under bus, then recants comments

Atletico Madrid became the first team in La Liga history to win three consecutive times at the Bernabeu today with a 1-0 win over Real Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo thinks that Real Madrid lost because his teammates are not as good as Cristiano Ronaldo.

“It bothers me when it’s said that Madrid is struggling because Cristiano is struggling,” said the 31-year-old after the game. “If everyone was at my level, perhaps we would be in first place. You always ask me these crappy questions -- it seems that here in Spain, I am in the s***. The numbers do not lie. Statistics never trick you -- it is easy.”

Here’s a number for you: Cristiano Ronaldo has not scored in five straight Madrid derbies. Here’s another statistic for you: Cristiano Ronaldo has not scored in five games against the current top five this season.

Well, needless to say, most of Spain did not take kindly to those comments. Someone most likely told Cristiano that he should “clarify” his comments as so not to come off like an arrogant teammate. He did just that, telling Marca after the fact that what he meant was if everyone was healthy and fit, they would be in first.

“When I said that I meant the physical level, not the game. I am not better than any of my teammates,” he told Marca.

Ah, I see, thanks for clarifying Cristiano.

For manager Zinedine Zindane, he doesn’t buy Ronaldo’s correction. He says the team didn’t follow his orders. “We were not as ready for the game as we thought we were,” Zidane said. “All I can say is that it’s not just about our fitness. The players are not unfit, it’s a question of everything. We didn’t play the game we had prepared.”
