Roberto Martinez is in real trouble, and sounds a bit like a man grasping at straws after his Everton side was overwhelmed by desperate Sunderland in a woeful 3-0 loss at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday.
And while Sunderland is much improved from the side that fell 6-2 at Goodison Park earlier this season, it’s possible that the Toffees have backslid by an even more dramatic gap.

They were sloppy. They were poor. And they are falling well short of their goals.
But Martinez, whose job status is in question, thinks his guys were working hard and just didn’t get the job done.
From EvertonFC.com:“We kept fighting in the second half,” added Martinez. “We changed tactically to get bodies around Rom and to get a bit higher up the pitch. We created better chances but then we hit the crossbar or their goalkeeper was in a good moment of form.

“Today, we competed for every ball and were full of effort and intent in wanting to win but the luck at the moment is not on our side.
“We have an opportunity now on Sunday against Norwich to put in a big effort and try to finish with a good performance.”
The Toffees are near the bottom of the form table, and all is not well at Goodison. What are the chances Martinez keeps his job this summer?
